Prestressed railway sleepers still going strong

Article Abstract:

Prestressed concrete railway sleepers offer a number of significant advantages over ordinary reinforced concrete sleepers. The latter may develop small hair cracks when exposed to stress, for example, and this may eventually cause the bond between concrete and reinforcement to be destroyed. Prestressed concrete allows significant amounts of steel to be saved, and is not vulnerable to cracking. There is now strong demand for prestressed sleepers, and there are orders in hand for around 300,000 for railways in the UK alone.

Paul Hyett Architects and Sir Frederick Snow & Partners were selected to design Burn Hall at the Fire Research Station at Garston. Burn Hall is a purpose built facility providing modern technology for experimental fire rsearch in safe and environmentally sound conditions. The air-extract and filtration system had to cater for a range of fire outputs, and there are ancillary rooms for the control and conditioning of materials and providing staff facilities.
