Article Abstract:

Sales of food, bakery and confectionery goods in the Netherlands increased from 43,813 million guilder in 1996 to 46,770 million guilder in 1997. The fish and fish products market increased from 954 million guilder in 1996 to 1,041 million guilder in 1997 helped by increased demand for frozen fish products. The main pork processed meat market increased to 418 million guilder in 1997 from 383 million guilder in 1996. Researchers found people in the Netherlands consumed up to 35 kilograms of chocolate each per year.

Article Abstract:

The Belgium private consumption food product market is forecast to maintain an increase of 1.1% between 1999-2001. Sales in the dairy product market showed a slight improvement during 1997, although the market requires a sustained marketing campaign to improve sales dramatically. Belgium has the highest proportion of households where bread is home-baked, using either hand or machine processes. Belgians consume up to 23,000 tons of fresh mussels every year, making them the largest mussel consumers in the world.

Article Abstract:

French consumers are forecast to spend 18% of total household expenditure on food products after the year 2010, after a slow decline from 33% of total expenditure during the 1960s, to about 18% in 1997. An increase in the number of hard discount stores is claimed to have reduced expenditure by offering lower priced goods and bulk buying. The important French egg consumption market is the largest in Europe, with an average of 260 eggs consumed per person during 1997.
