Progress at last?

Article Abstract:

Raids conducted by Britain's Special Air Service (SAS) on two suspected Bosnian Serb war criminals close to the town of Prijedor in Bosnia may generate true progress in the former Yugoslavia. Simo Drljaca, who ran prison camps where Muslims were tortured and starved, was shot to death by British soldiers. Milan Kovacevic is being held for trial by a war crimes tribunal. The death of Drljaca may indirectly help the cause of Serb Republic President Biljana Plavsic, who struggled against Drljaca for power in part of the Serb section of Bosnia.

The increasing loneliness of being Turkey

Article Abstract:

The continued campaign of Turkey's army against the Welfare Party in mid-1997 provides a new weapon to members of the European Union (EU) who claim Turkey will never be a full democracy, and thus unable to become a member of the EU. Moreover, the US faces a bigger challenge in asserting Turkey's military value to the North American Treaty Organization (NATO) alliance, as the group mandates that potential members be good democrats. The ideal is for Turkey to balance Islam and democracy.

The Guevara effect

Article Abstract:

Rebellions are more often ineffective in ousting dictatorships as proven in the case of the late guerilla war advocate Che Guevara. Many of the insurgencies spurred or aided by Guevara only sustained repression. There are some signs that Latin Americans may resort to Guevara's belief of creating social change through rebellion. Colombia and Peru both have recently seen guerrilla activity in 1997, although neither movement has been particularly successful.
