Proof positive that privatisation works

Article Abstract:

Privatisation has brought a number of important benefits to businesses in the UK, according to research undertaken by economic research consultancy National Economic Research Associates for the Centre for Policy Studies. Privatised industries have been able to improve their safety performance, for example, and have seen a rise in labour productivity and total factor productivity. Prices have fallen for customers of privatised utilities, and the government has benefited from the proceeds of privatisation.

99 more companies added to MPP

Article Abstract:

The Polish Government allocated shares from nearly 100 companies to 15 National Investment Funds (NIF's) as part of its Mass Privatisation Programme (MPP), which now involves 512 companies with a net value estimated at three billion American dollars. 19% of the privatisation coupons, which will represent one share when the NIF's are floated, have already been bought. Public trading on the Warsaw Stock Exchange is expected at the end of 1996.

Slower pace in first six months

Article Abstract:

Privatizations have proceeded more slowly in the first 6 months of 1995 than in 1st half 1994. Privatization proceeds were only $18.4 billion for 1st half 1995 compared with nearly $37 billion for 1st half 1994. Equity markets are less stable in 1995, but there are a number of privatizatiuons which are scheduled for 1996 and 2nd half 1995. If schedules are adhered to, proceeds from 2nd half 1995 could exceed those from 2nd half 1994.
