Punch nears deal with Allied Domecq

Allied Domecq PLC is near an agreement on a deal to sell its pubs to Punch Taverns Ltd. Punch is offering to acquire the pubs for just over 2.6 billion pound sterling (3.99 billion euros). An agreement would conclude one of the most contentious takeover fights in Great Britain's recent history. Punch had been battling Whitbread PLC for Allied's pubs. Whitbread withdrew from the bidding after antitrust concerns were raised.
