The gentle botanist

Article Abstract:

A conservationalist describes his first sight of a mountain tapir in the Sangay National Park in Ecuador and his efforts since then to study and conserve it with the help of various international programs. It has a heavy rounded body, prehensile proboscis, woolly fur coat and a stout trunk for selecting foliage and fruits, for drinking, bathing, and self defense. It is helpful in seeding a variety of herbs, shrubs and trees that prevented erosion and maintains the vital watershed.

Locating identity in Phaswane Mpe's Welcome to Our Hillbrow

Article Abstract:

The complex complicities of personal, cultural and racial identities in terms of an uneasy relation to place in physical and a figurative sense are explored in Mpe's novel 'Welcome to Our Hillbrow'. The novel that is written in second person has the effect of distancing and engaging the reader in the implied community signaled by the 'our' of the novel's title, at the same time.
