Toiling from there to here

Article Abstract:

Working lives changed dramatically from 1770, when factories began to spread, and work started to move away from the home. People worked in larger groups, and there were very long hours until the 1840s when legislation limiting the working day began to appear. There was harsh discipline in the factories, and workers who were laid off had less protection than when they lived in as part of the household of an employer. There was a gradual improvement, and new areas of employment became available. Domestic service still accounted for 39% of the female work force in Britain in 1911.

High time for justice

Article Abstract:

The evidence of mental health staff could be used to help convict people who commit crimes against mental health patients if proposals put forward by the UK Home Office are agreed in 1999. Female mental health patients are most at risk from assault from other male patients or male health care workers, although little is done when a crime is reported. The government is seeking to change the law protecting mental health patients by placing the onus on the police to investigate all allegations of crime.
