Global Crossing agrees to merge with US West

Article Abstract:

Global Crossing Ltd. has acknowledged that it is planning to merge with US West Inc. in an attempt to form a full-service telecommunications firm. The newly-merged entity hopes to become a major rival to AT&T Corp. and MCI WorldCom Inc. The deal has a value of $35.5 billion. Global Crossing runs an undersea cable that connects Europe and the US. The company is also planning to construct three more. A 22-member board will control the merged entity.
