RBS chief alters stance on European mergers

Article Abstract:

Concerns over the financial, legal, and cultural complexities of cross border mergers are lessening among European banks as the industry faces fewer options for expansion and the threat of U.S. banks' greater market capitalization. Royal Bank of Scotland chief executive officer Fred Goodwin has said that European mergers are an increasing possibility, and that his company will not be pursuing further acquisitions in the U.S. at this time.

GE deal sets path to Russian market for credit cards

GE Consumer Finance seeks to capitalize on Russia's growing consumer credit market, and sees its acquisition of the country's leading Visa-issuer, DeltaBank, as its first step in achieving that goal. DeltaBank, which received its banking license in 1997, is owned by the private-equity firm Delta Capital Management.
