Article Abstract:

GMAC has been forced to take a $275 million charge against earnings to account for the huge loss it incurred as a result of bad loans to developer John McNamara. McNamara managed to run up a $4.5 million debt over a four year period before being caught by GMAC's lawyers.

Bigger and richer: mortgage banks in America

The US mortgage loan market is thriving, as many types of financial companies vie to increase their share. Profit margins come mostly from the servicing of mortgages. Specialty mortgage banks have increased their market share from 21% in 1980 to over 50% in 1992.
