Reasons of state: India opts to do business with Burmese junta

Article Abstract:

Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao's Indian government will renew contacts with Burma's ruling junta while continuing to call for democracy in Burma. India has excoriated the Burmese military regime ever since it cracked down on pro-democracy elements in 1988. However, a Mar 1993 visit to Burma by Indian Foreign Sec J.N. Dixit presaged a change in India's policy toward Burma. Trade and the control of rebels operating on the Indo-Burmese border were the main reasons for the softening of India's policy.

New faces, old policy: impact of cabinet changes is uncertain

Article Abstract:

The cabinet reorganization implemented by Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao was planned to ensure a smooth budget session in the parliament on Feb 1993. While the new cabinet officers are not expected to alleviate the political damage suffered by Narasimha Rao following the Hindu riots in Dec 1992, they should at least enhance the line up of economic reformists in government. The appointees also bolster the number of leaders belonging to religious minorities.
