Reflective planning theorising and professional protectionism

Article Abstract:

UK planning decision-making is increasingly shifting towards the pragmatic and operating without reference to theory. Planning professionals have adopted a technocratic and apolitical approach to the planning system as a result of the proliferation of planning law and guidance from the state, and the failure of planning theory. Planners are increasingly reluctant to take on board the views of non-professionals during the decision-making process, and this reflects the marginalisation of politicians. Article further discusses planning and responds to paper by Philip Allmendinger.

Second homes: A new framework for policy

Article Abstract:

Academics and policy makers are concerned about the impacts of homes in the English countryside since the last few decades. Shucksmith's analysis of second home impacts reveals that much of what is commonly understood about second homes is guesswork. Their impact on housing access and affordability is difficult to discern as they represent only one component of housing pressure.
