Reformist roadshow: leaders, liberals rally around patriarch Deng

Article Abstract:

Reformist moves in China are undermining the power and support of political hardliners. Most prominent of the protests is the collective publication of dissident intellectuals' works extolling the political reforms of Deng Xiaoping. A seminar on the publication, 'The Tide of History,' was held for an exclusively Chinese audience which included Central Party Leaders. Additionally, Jiang Zemin's pronouncements in support of Deng also enabled him to overshadow the local and foreign activities of Prime Minister Li Peng and the Party.

Palace purge: with the sacking of Beijing party secretary Chen Xitong, the first public shot has been fired in the struggle to succeed ailing patriarch Deng Xiaoping

Article Abstract:

General Secretary Jiang Zemin of China's communist party is making further use of the corruption purges that frequently affect the party's upper echelons. He probably engineered the removal of Beijing party chief Chen Xitong recently, replacing him with Qiao Shi protege Wei Jianxing. The move may be a strike at Chen's patron and Jiang's supposed ally, Premier Li Peng. It may also be a maneuver by Qiao to expend Jiang's political capital. Jiang is now well established, but the purges could prove a two-edged weapon.

Flourishing grassroots: village-level democracy blooms

Article Abstract:

Democracy has been spreading in often unpredictable ways throughout China since the 1987 law allowing direct elections of village mayors and councils. Such grassroots politics may be the final hope of the Central Party, but the results of elections can be hard to predict, and the positions open have real, if strictly local, power. They have moved groups long marginal into positions of power, while others have had to begin fighting for their seats.
