Detective superintendent Ray Mallon's bid to become mayor of Middlesbrough, UK, could be embarrassing for prime minister Tony Blair. Blair had praised 'Robocop' Mallon and his successful 'zero tolerance' policies. However, Mallon has since been suspended as part of corruption investigations.

The atomic force microscope (AFM) can store digital information 100 times more closely than compact discs. In order to speed AFM reading rates, International Business Machines Corp engineers fashioned a sharp stylus and a spinning disc surface similar to a phonograph.
