Rough trade

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese investors in China face significant dangers. Indeed, 57 Taiwanese businessmen have disappeared or been killed in China since 1991, while in the same period 127 were kidnapped, robbed and detained. It appears that Taiwanese investors are particularly targeted because they are present in China in such large numbers while relations between the two countries remain strained. Bureaucracy and distrust make it hard to resolve business disputes, and larger Taiwanese companies are therefore turning to business associations for help.

Little Taiwan

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese investment is important in the Dongguan region of China, and there are 4,000 factories run by 25,000 Taiwanese businessmen, with 2 million employees who are mainly migrant workers. Salaries are high, though life is hard in such frontier regions. China offers educated technical workers and low wages as well as an expanding market. There is less concern about envrionmental and employee protection than in western countries, and China's transportation links are improving.
