Runaway train

Article Abstract:

J. Walter Thompson Canada is on the right track once again after going downhill for some time beginning in the late 1980s. The 87-yr old Toronto, Ontario-based advertising agency, which for two decades was the largest in Canada, fell to the 20th slot in a ranking survey made by Marketing Magazine in 1997. The arrival of John Clinton in 1998 has put things in their proper perspective. Old clients who have stuck it out with the agency have expressed their satisfaction with Clinton's priorities.

All dressed down

Article Abstract:

The Canadian apparel industry posted nearly C$14 billion in sales in 1998, an increase of 4.4% from C$13.4 billion in 1997. Based on estimates from Retail Council of Canada and Statistics, these figures exclude sales at the department store level. Discounters, such as Zellers Inc and Wal-Mart Canada Inc, are succeeding in penetrating the market. By competing on price and developing their own brands, discount stores are predicted to continue to enjoy growth above industry norms.

Kym Robertson, TD's director of media relations, said it is too early to discuss marketing plans. Both TD and CT have restricted their campaigns full-page ads placed in major dailies.
