New competition awaits Asian fund-tracking firms

Article Abstract:

Micropal Asia Ltd will soon be facing tough competition from other companies in Asia's mutual-fund tracking market. New competitors include Lipper Analytical Services Inc and Malaysia's Normandy Advisory Services Bhd. Competition in the fund-tracking market will allow retail investors to directly check the performance of their fund investments. Micropal, which has operated in the region for 10 years, will battle with Lipper and the rest for the loyalties of retail investors.

Thai equity funds hold some promise

Article Abstract:

Thai equity funds, which returned an average loss of 50% for the year ended May 2, 1997, can help Thailand recover from its current economic turmoil. Fund managers are looking for signs of recovery before putting funds back into Thailand's market. Thailand's exports, which started to fall 0.1% in 1996, should start picking up again in late 1997. Interest rates should fall, providing more liquidity to stimulate the system.
