SFO seeks aircraft size minimum

Article Abstract:

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) director John Martin has requested the FAA to allow them to require the use of larger aircraft instead of numerous small aircraft to meet demand. SFO's request was in response to its poor punctuality record which is due to the city's unfavorable weather conditions. Martin has argued that larger airplanes would lessen the congestion that is currently plaguing the airport. Airlines are against the plan since its would be costly for them, for their passengers, and the economies of the Bay Area.

Shopping for airport profit

Article Abstract:

US airports are revamping their retail strategy in favor of specialty retail shops sporting popular brand names over generic news and gift shops. Airports are also preferring to give concessions to a dozen or more retailers rather than just one or two vendors to give consumers more variety. The strategy appears to be working as Pittsburgh International Airport, one of the first airports to change its retail line-up, has seen its average passenger spending increase to almost $7.40 in 1997 from $2.40 in 1992.
