Exports hold the key

Article Abstract:

South Korean first-quarter 2001 gross domestic product growth was 3.7% over the gross domestic product in first-quarter 2000, but the figure is much less than the 12.6% growth in gross domestic product South Korea experienced during the same period last year. There is worry that weakness in the stock market and technology sector will affect exports and future growth. Corporate and governmental efforts to help struggling companies and the economy have been criticized.

Article Abstract:

General Motors' announcement that it will buy parts of Daewoo Motor caused Hyundai Motor shares to drop 5.1% to 14,950 won. Long-term effects of the acquisition may show the GM-Daewoo firm take market share away from Hyundai, although the short-term impact should be minimal.
