SWEDEN: EDF'S PLANS

Article Abstract:

Electricite de France (EDF), the French electricity company, wants to team up with Graninge, the fifth-largest Swedish electricity company, to create a multi-energy multi-service company and to strengthen the group on its network of subsidiaries. According to Isabelle Mathieu, EDF's delegate in Scandinavia, EDF intends to double the number of its clients at Graninge, as well as its production capacity, within five years. Graninge is the leader in 'green electricity' in Sweden, 100% from hydraulic power stations, which is a competitive advantage for Graninge in terms of marketing.

South Africa: A look at PN Energy Services

Article Abstract:

Eskom, the South African electricity company, and EDF, the French company, founded PN Energy Services, which installed 43,000 connections at Khayelistsha, east of the Cape, in 1993. the company's losses have been cut by 5% due to its prepayment system and its client management software. The company plans to make an additional 12,000 connections at Khayelistsha in 2001 and 2002. PN Energy Services' plans are to extend its software to all of Eskom's prepayment areas and to invest in two new concessions at Cato Ridge in the south and at Sterkspruit in the southwest of Lesotho.

HAITI: A LOOK AT EDH'S DEFICIT

Article Abstract:

According to the managing director of Electricite d'Haiti (EDH), there is a 30% electricity deficit in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, and a 30% to 40% deficit in major rural areas. These deficits are because EDH cannot manage to cover needs, and to the theft of energy which leads to 30% to 40% in losses in the residential sector. The company is trying to reduce theft with the help of the police, to increase its supply, to interconnect the network, and to make production profitable until it is privatised
