Saudi Arabia's electricity sector structure

Article Abstract:

Four Saudi Consolidated Electricity Companies (SCECOs) are responsible for electricity production and distribution in Saudi Arabia, with a further three special producers. Demand for electricity in the Kingdom has increased significantly over the last ten years with 4.5% annual growth forecast until the year 2020. In order to meet additional demand, Saudi Arabia will require an extra 50,000MW of generating capacity.

California Electricity is set for change

Article Abstract:

The Californian electricity industry is currently vertically integrated with utilities taking control of all aspects of their systems including generation and distribution. The 'Blue Book', an order issued by the Californian Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), proposes that the electric power market should be divided into a Direct Access Sector and a Utility Service Sector.

Lisbon opts for modified liberation

Article Abstract:

The Portuguese power sector is about to be reformed. The framework will combine liberalisation and state control. Both public and private sector systems will be in use. They will be controlled by a planning body and an independent regulatory authority. Third parties will be given access to the high-tension transmission grid on payment of a fee.
