Scheduling about a given common due date to minimize mean squared deviation of completion times

Article Abstract:

A dynamic programming algorithm is shown to be an efficient procedure in solving tightly restricted instances of mean squared deviation (MSDP) with as many as 100 jobs in less than two seconds. The algorithm addresses the problem of minimizing the MSDP job completion times about a given common due date. No polynomial or even pseudo-polynomial time algorithms have yet been found to identify an optimal solution to MSDP.
