Sainsbury agrees to buy Star Markets in the U.S

Article Abstract:

J. Sainsbury PLC, the second largest retailer in the United Kingdom, will acquire Star Markets of the United States for $221 million and the assumption of $269 million in debt. Dino Adriano, Sainsbury's group chief executive, is confident that the merger will be successful. Some analysts, however, doubt that Sainsbury will be able to compete in the U.S. market even though it will be the second largest supermarket chain in New England with 20% of the market share.
