Seeds of ferment

Article Abstract:

There are 60 million people who live in poverty in rural Vietnam and they are resorting to violence in protest. The state has not taken any comprehensive steps to overcome poverty and corruption despite advice from economists that the state should allow farmers direct involvement in selling and exporting the rice they grow. This would mean job losses for government officials and the loss of important revenue so they are reluctant to sanction it. One solution is to encourage cooperatives but the farmers have had experience of disasterous state farms and are not keen on the idea.

Virtual reality: tycoons try to project unity amid certainty

Article Abstract:

Twenty of Hong Kong's wealthiest and most powerful tycoons have launched the Better Hong Kong Foundation to promote the colony in the face of China's 1997 takeover, but critics smell self-interest. The group, created by Henry Cheng, includes Li Ka-shing, Run Run Shaw, and Stanley Ho; its executive committee is run by Nellie Fong and Leonie Ki. Many have extensive investments in China and run companies based outside Hong Kong; some have passports from overseas. The group's timing, however, points to concerns about China's sincerity.

Kuok vs Shaw

Article Abstract:

The Feb 13, 1996, proposal by Robert Kuok's South China Morning Post (Holdings) to acquire TVE (Holdings) in a share swap may reflect a grudge between Kuok and TVE chairman Sir Run Run Shaw. Analysts note that Kuok would be converting his 34.4% of thinly traded TVE stock into more liquid shares in SCMP, easing later sales. A source close to Shaw Brothers, also headed by Shaw and a 39.5% owner of TVE, says the Kuoks want Shaw to buy them out, and predicts Shaw Bros will end up with TVE, whose profits have recently slumped.
