Lee Kuan Yew offers U.S. some advice on Asia policy

Article Abstract:

Singaporean senior minister Lee Kuan Yew feels that a triangular Asian- Pacific relationship will rest mainly on the US-Sino relations even as he urges the US to adopt a strategy of engagement regarding China. The Nixon Center for Peace and Freedom Awardee also advised the US to give incentives to China to help it evolve into a major power. However, Lee cautions that China is an old civilization and is not easily cowed by external threats. On the other hand, he warned China against asserting its hegemony to avoid alarming the whole Asian region.

U.S. frustration mounts as transplants from Japan purchase car parts at home

Article Abstract:

Japanese automotive manufacturers in the US continue to secure needed parts from Japan, an activity which the Clinton administration has minimal control. The substantial presence of Japanese transplants in the US has not cut the US' automotive trade deficit with Japan, which has risen from $30.8 billion in 1990 to a projected $39.4 billion for 1995. Deficit in automotive parts has also increased from $9.6 billion in 1990 to a projected $14.2 billion for 1995.
