Seizing opportunities in Japan Inc...

Article Abstract:

The financial crisis in Japan has forced it to open its doors to foreign investment. Dire need has overcome the pervasiveness of its traditional closed corporate culture. In 1998, an estimated $7 billion in foreign investments were posted. Industry experts believe that the year 1999 may bring more. Moreover, these developments have opened the eyes of insular Japanese firms to the soundness of western management theories and practices. However, a clear strategy on restructuring must be drafted to ensure the successful transition in corporate cultures.

Financing the economic miracle

Article Abstract:

Asian countries should liberalize their capital markets to allow the inflow of much-needed foreign funds. The infrastructure requirements of the 18 nations in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum will require as much as $2 trillion through 2007. Asian companies should look for sources of funds other than equity issuance and bank loans. The development of local bond markets will enable many Asian state-owned and private corporations to issue bonds to the developed markets.
