Class peace

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government has published a policy document on education in inner cities. The government opposes selection by schools, but there are proposals for special treatment for gifted children such as summer schools, and for schools to be able to select some gifted children, a type of compromise. The government also plans to take responsibility for education away from authorities where schools are failing, and proposes mentors for weaker students. Meanwhile, there are proposals to tackle illiteracy among adults.

Selective amnesia

Article Abstract:

The British government is ambiguous in its attitude to selection in schools. The political left in the Labor Party oppose selection and especially the remaining selective schools, or grammar schools. Praents are to decide whether grammar schools will remain, with all parents in the area voting where there is a large number of grammar schools, and only feeder school parents voting in other areas. The government has yet to decide how to allow popular schools to select children, and to permit parents to choose schools.
