Sellling the dream

Article Abstract:

In contrast to its public housing estates, the private housing development at Milton Keynes, England is dull and retrospective. The speculative developers have abandoned the planners' ideals of achieving a social mix and have segregated houses by size and price. The styles reflect the image of an idealised rural past with show house interiors designed to sell the idea of the cottage or country manor house. The estates are laid out in tree-like plans separating people from their neighbours in the same way that rooms are separated within the houses.
