Prosperous island is vulnerable to Asia's lingering woes

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's thriving economy may suffer increased interest rates in the face of overbuilt, overextended cities and factories. The country evaded the financial disaster that damaged currencies and stock markets in other Asian countries because Taiwan has little foreign debt and plenty of foreign-exchange reserves. The fear is that a fall in exports is battling with an increase in interest rates across the region, which may drive companies to default on loans.

Beijing leans toward the countryside for growth: as reforms clamp down on urban spending, the Chinese government looks to the vast heartland

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government is launching a monumental effort to boost buying in the rural region as it now serves as the country's new economic salvation. A large part of the proposed $1 bil infrastructure-spending program is foreseen to fund rural roads, bridges and power plants, in a bid to connect peasants to the country's national market. Moreover, China has increased grain prices in 1998 to raise farmers' incomes.
