Shopping by numbers: research behind Bluewater Park, one of the UK's last massive out-of-town shopping centres, geared its design around clients and customers

Article Abstract:

A major new shopping centre under construction at Bluewater Park, Kent, is expected to be the last of its kind, due to out-of-town shopping restrictions. Land Lease undertook a Target Group Index analysis and held discussion groups over a period of 12 months, when it acquired the site. The types of people expected to use the centre were identified and factors of importance were established, such as car parking, catering, the hospitality concept and retail mix. The scheme is in a triangular shape, reducing its apparent size, with distinct themes at each arm.
