Sino-British court accord draws mixed reactions

Hong Kong Gov. Chris Patten urged the legislature to approve a recently concluded agreement on the establishment of a Court of Final Appeal with China. Under the agreement, the UK's Privy Council will be replaced by the Court of Final Appeal, which will be tasked with adjudicating cases after Hong Kong is turned over to China in 1997. Patten noted that a 'legal vacuum' could ensue if the Hong Kong legislature fails to approve the agreement. However, several prominent Hong Kong leaders, particularly Democrat leader Martin Lee, criticized the agreement for its apparent bias toward the Chinese government.

Kemayan is given court protection from creditors

Article Abstract:

Kemayan Corp. Bhd. has become the latest Malaysian firm to be issued a court protection from its creditors. Since the regional financial crisis started, 25 listed Malaysian firms have been given court protection. According to a statement filed with the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, Kemayan has until May 12, 1999, to offer a restructuring plan to its creditors. Kemayan's plan may include capital reduction, rights issues and the disposal assets. The court protection order will free property company, Kemayan, and its guarantors from legal actions of bondholders.

After rough opening, new airport in Hong Kong now draws accolades

Traveler sentiment about Hong Kong's new Chek Lap Kok airport has improved dramatically since its opening in Jul 1998. The airport experienced many operational problems, causing passengers to wait for their luggage for an average of two hours while many waited for two days. Chek Lap Kok's customers are now raving about the average 10-minute wait for luggages and the less than 15-minute processing through immigration.
