Skies look clear for EVA

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese airline EVA Airways' public offering scheduled in the latter part of Oct 1999 has elicited positive feedback because of the airline's strong cargo business. Despite the earthquake that hit Taiwan in Sept and its squabble with the Philippines over air rights, analysts do not expect EVA's shares to be severely affected by the two incidents. On the contrary, an analyst predicted that EVA's stock price will rise to 20% within one year of the offering. The airline's cargo business netted more than 40% of EVA's revenues for 1998, following a growth of 32%.

Singapore Airlines and Qantas Airways are negotiating the acquisition of Air New Zealand and Ansett Australia. The deals would include Qantas purchasing Singapore Airline's 25% stake in Air New Zealand, Air New Zealand selling off its 100% stake of Ansett Australia to Singapore Airlines. Although the deals are still considered preliminary, all companies involved could benefit extremely if agreements are reached.
