Slippery slope

Article Abstract:

Pakistan's economy has encountered persistent but varied problems since Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's 1993 election on pledges to meet targets set by the International Monetary Fund. Inflation is now running at 15% and govt revenues July-Dec were 27% below target. The past three cotton crops failed, and money supply is expanding at 15.6% compared to an 11.5% goal. Some blame lawlessness in Karachi for many problems. The government lowered its fiscal-year GDP growth projection from 6.9% to 5.3%. However, reserves appear stable.

Flawed alliance: Bhutto topples former ally in Punjab

Article Abstract:

Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto had Punjab Chief Minister Manzoor Wattoo, formerly her ally, fired on Sept 5, 1995, after 15 ministers left the ruling coalition charging Wattoo with corruption. Wattoo is a member of a minority faction of the Pakistan Muslim League, one that backs Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party. The provincial assembly must reconvene in two months, with Bhutto backing Makhdoom Altaf Ahmad as Wattoo's replacement and her opponents, including Wattoo, supporting Chaudhry Parvez Elahi.

Death in the dynasty

Article Abstract:

Benazir Bhutto, prime minister of Pakistan, has been accused of involvement in the death of her brother, Mir Murtaza Bhutto. He was shot and left bleeding before police permitted him to be transported to hospital. There is no evidence that Benazir Bhutto was involved though she had been involved in a dispute with her brother. She has ordered an inquiry, but the death has undermined confidence in the ability of her government to impose rule of law in Pakistan.
