Slow growth keeps nation's economy ahead of its peers

Article Abstract:

Philippines displayed a remarkable economic performance during the first half of 1998, as banks and export rates continue to show sign of modest improvement despite the ongoing regional crisis in Asia. Statistics revealed that exports grew by 19% during the period while seven of the Philippines' leading banks recorded increased profits. Economists expect the country's gross domestic product to grow by 1.5% to 2.5% while non-performing loans are anticipated to increase by 15%. SM Prime Holdings Inc maintains its status as the leading shopping mall operator in the Philippines, posting a 24% increase in total sales for the first quarter of 1998.
