Article Abstract:

According to the Bank of Finland, Finns took new housing loans for a total of FIM 4.2bn (USD 778bn) in June 1998. The credits increased by approx. FIM 0.5bn, i.e. by 13% from May 1998. The total amount is nearly half as large as in June 1997. The Finnish housing loans totalled to FIM 104.8bn in June 1998, up only 8.2% from June 1997. The difference is estimated to be due to loan rearrangements in connection with the removal of stamp tax on the loans. Finland's Finnish mark denominated loans have increased by 6.1% from June 1997. The average interest rate of all new loans was 4.93%.

Value of Finnish textile and clothing exports amounted to Fmk 4.6bn (US$ 0.9bn) in 1997, up 15% from the previous year. 77% of textile production and 56% of clothing production was exported. Value of exports is expected to increase 10% in 1998. Value of clothing and textile imports amounted to Fmk 8.5bn in 1997. Production of clothing decreased 6% in 1997, as production was moved abroad. On the contrary, textile production increased 6.3%.
