Sound-proof studios with a view

Article Abstract:

The BBC's new premises for Radio Cumbria in Carlisle, England, had to meet strict sound requirements, and also consider the need for economy and simplicity. Another factor was the site itself, which was in a sensitive conservation area and was located on a major road. The building, designed by Architects Plus, fills the whole street frontage, so that it offers a prominent public face to passing vehicles and pedestrians. This is reinforced by the open reception area. The new building meets its acoustic requirements and is user-friendly, but looks like a house and not a radio station.
