London saturated with office space for next decade, warns property consultant

Article Abstract:

Property consultant, Peter Hawkes forecasts that London, England will have 70 million sq ft of vacant office space by 2001. He predicts tha total number in the office workforce will not grow although the proportion of Londoners employed in offices will increase from 60% to 70%. Demographic trends coupled with the trend towards siting offices in the outskirts of the capital and the difficulties of commuting will ensure demand for office space in central London is low. Architects could be called on to convert redundant office buildings for housing and other uses.

New opportunities for safe design in buildings

Article Abstract:

Fire engineering has become an increasingly important part of building design. This development is viewed positively by building control officers, who believe that the construction industry as a whole has a lot to learn from fire engineering. Until recently, it has been common for fire engineering solutions to not be properly included in a project, but a stage is now being reached where it is no longer simply a variation of the approved document requirements.
