How EC rules affect architects

Article Abstract:

The role of architects will be affected by various changes to the public-sector procurement process as a result of legislation including the EC Services Directive. The Services Directive sets out various procedures for public-sector procurement, and there is concern amongst architects over the limitations of the selection criteria. The Directive may have disadvantages for architects, but its overall effect could be positive, by giving British architects the chance to gain contracts in mainland Europe. Architects will also be in a good positive to extend their range of services.

Adapt or die in a new economy

Article Abstract:

The change from post-Fordism to a network economy will affect architectural services by requiring architects to offer additional services and to be willing to work closely with other professionals, in the building industry. Clients will be looking for an overall approach to their architectural projects and not just services from a variety of different suppliers. Architectural practices should also be aware of the increasing importance of the efficient use of computers. The increasing use of computer-mediated environments are part of the changing business economy.

Understanding the whole story

Article Abstract:

A gradual transition of the economic order towards a network structure is producing changes in business practices. These changes include a move away from reductionism and towards holism. Clients want solutions rather than services. Manifestations of this change in the architectural sector may include higher levels of computer connectivity, the requirement for a total quality management service rather than quality assurance, and the development of joint marketing by related companies.
