South African work permits: the impossible solution

Article Abstract:

The exhausting amount of bureaucracy that businesses must undergo to obtain work permits in South Africa has been one of the greatest difficulties of doing business in that country. Compounding the problem is the fact that many skilled South African workers are leaving the country. Domestic firms have as much difficulty as foreign firms in obtaining work permits for badly needed, foreign skilled employees. Yet South Africa has a largely unskilled labor force for which there are not enough jobs.

Ken Seddon from Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, has carried out research on solvents and there has been interest in his ionic solvents from major companies. These solvents can leave steel and glass containers intact, while dissolving the contents. Support has come from rival chemical companies such as DuPont and Merck, which are prepared to collaborate over a long term venture. Meanwhile, French Petroleum Institute researchers have also been carrying out work in this area.
