South Korean business investigations squeeze stock prices

Article Abstract:

Government-led investigations into alleged tax-evasion and other business anomalies practiced by South Korean conglomerates or chaebols are creating havoc in the nation's stock market. The government effort, part of the reforms promised by Pres Kim Dae Jung, is causing concerns among investors who are worried that the investigations might affect other businesses. South Korea's securities and bond markets have been on the decline since the Daewoo Group's near-bankruptcy in Jul 1999.

Consumers increase spending

Article Abstract:

The resurgence of consumer confidence in South Korea's economy is fueling the economic recovery of the nation. The proof of this is the increase in consumer spending which reached 9% for the second quarter of 1999. In addition, investment in facilities went up to 37% . Another positive indicator of South Korea's economic recovery was the increase in gross domestic product (GDP). Compared to 1998's 7.2% for the second quarter, the GDP posted 9.8% in the same quarter for 1999.

While Seoul-Pyongyang flap persists, North-South trade continues to grow

Article Abstract:

The political tension between North and South Korea belies the growing trade links between the two countries. Trade between the two reached $287 million in 1995, some 21 times the level seen in 1990, even as both sides exchanged heated rhetoric. The South Korean government has apparently adopted a policy of using private investment as an incentive for North Korean participation in direct peace talks.
