Sparkling-wine makers get a new vintage

Article Abstract:

Freixenet and Codorniu SA, Spain's top makers of sparkling wine, are being taken over by younger generation as patriarchs of both companies retire. Freixenet 73-year-old Chairman Jose Ferrer is expected to hand over his duties in the next few months to his 56-year-old nephew Jose Luis Bonet. Pedro Ferrer, an economist and California-trained enologist, was also appointed in 1997 as managing director. Bonet, who has 12 children, is a university professor of economics. In September 1998, Codorniu had 46-year-old Maria del Mar Raventos as its new chairman. Raventos took the reigns from her cousin, 72-year-old Manuel Raventos.
