Spirit of the age

Article Abstract:

Depression is a health problem world wide, and nine tenths of sufferers do not receive the appropriate treatment. Depression appears to affect younger people earlier in their lives in the US. The illness can affect productivity at work and is linked to absenteeism. Depression may be linked to genetic factors as well as unemployment and other environmental factors. The case of Russia illustrates links between depression and economic hardship. Bereavement reactions may be seen as depression and treated with drugs, though critics argue that some grief is necessary for recovery. Psychotherapy tends to be used less in the US, where it is seen as too expensive.

Disposing of dementia

Article Abstract:

Research on the prevention of Alzheimer's disease indicates that vitamin E is a possible treatment, and trials are to be carried out to investigate this further. Other possibilities include vitamin C, and oestrogen, though men face problems in taking a female hormone of this kind. Acetylcholine deficiency appears to be linked to Alzheimer's, and treatment could arise from research in this area, Other promising candidates include non-steroidal anti-infalmmatory products.

High in the heartland

Article Abstract:

Methamphetamine abuse is causing problems in the US, where it is cheap and its usage is spreading. The drug may be used by workers who have to stay awake for long hours, and by students, and girls seeking to lose weight. The production of the drug involves the creation of toxic waste, and users may become psychotic and violent. The drug is often smuggled from Mexico. Major cities have yet to be affected, but this could change, and the problem could become more serious.
