Spot the argument

Article Abstract:

The foreign policy of the German Social Democrats is similar to that of the government, and has changed since the 1980s. The party's candidate to be chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, has met Bill Clinton in a meeting that emphasised this shift in policy, which has become more pro-US. The party's position on European monetary union, the enlargement of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and other issues is similar to that of the government. German chancellor, Helmut Kohl, argues that the Social Democrats could form a coalition with the Greens, but this may not occur, and even if it does, the defense and foreign ministries are likely to be occupied by Social Democrats.

Volker Ruhe, Germany's next foreign minister?

Article Abstract:

Volker Ruhe has been German defense minister for six years and successfully merged the forces of West Germany with forces from eastern Germany, and cut total numbers. He supported the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) early on, though chancellor Helmut Kohl was concerned about offending Russia. Ruhe also favors intervention in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. Ruhe could become foreign minister if a coalition government were set up in Germany between the Social Democrats and Christian Democrats. Ruhe denies planning to take on this role, but he and Gerhard Schroder, Social Democrat candidate for chancellor, get on well.
