Standing room only

Article Abstract:

Conditions for passengers on United Kingdom railroads have worsened with overcrowding becoming more serious and punctuality worsening. Deputy prime minister, John Prescott, has told the railroad operators to improve their performance or they could lose their franchises, but there has been little sign of improvement. The railroads were privatized in a hurry by the former Conservative administration and the lowest bids won franchises for the operators. The support given by the Treasury is dropping, and this means that costs have to be cut and revenues from passengers must rise. There are also problems because the train and track operations have been separated.
