Staying ahead in the Philippines

Article Abstract:

Some Filipinos fear their nation's economic recovery, which was engineered by Pres Fidel Ramos, will stall when his six-year term ends in 1998. An amendment to the 1987 constitution would be needed to allow him a second term, but many fear an economic slide in the hands of a successor.

The Philippines is demonstrating that democracy can foster economic development. Multinationals cite political stability as their reason for investing in the developing country. An important test of the democracy and growth theory will be in 1998, when Pres Ramos must step down.

No, Manila is not Mexico

Article Abstract:

The Philippines hopes foreign investors do not think that it will be the next country to suffer economic collapse like Mexico. The country has paid off a great deal of its foreign debt and its economy is growing. Politics have become more stable as well.
