Steady growth predicted for Pacific Rim nations

Article Abstract:

The Pacific Economic Cooperation Council predicts that 19 of the 20 Pacific Rim countries it tracks will experience an average GDP growth rate of 3.9% in 1996. Among the different Pacific Rim nations slated for growth, the Philippines is predicted to achieve record-high GDP growth because of its increased domestic production and effective inflation reduction programs in the 1995-97 period. The council attributes the impressive average GDP growth forecasts to the growing interdependence of Latin American and East Asian economies and increased domestic production.

Pressure grows on Clinton to recognize Vietnam

Article Abstract:

Several business groups are pressuring the Clinton administration to normalize relations with Vietnam to capitalize on the country's growing international trade. However, Pres. Clinton is reluctant to recognize Vietnam, fearing that he may be perceived as being 'too soft' on Vietnam. Nonetheless, those pressing for the normalization hope that Sens. John McCain and John Kerry's plan to introduce a bill calling for the normalization of US-Vietnamese relations will encourage Clinton to change his position.
