Pressure cooker

Article Abstract:

China's military exercises and other pressure tactics have had their effect on Taiwan but may ultimately fail to weaken the island's leadership and morale. Taiwan can resist an invasion, and using missiles against it would destroy the prize. However, China has aroused the pro-unification forces on Taiwan, and especially within the ruling Kuomintang Party, that consider President Lee Teng-hui a pro-independence traitor. Taiwan's financial institutions have also suffered from the public-relations blitz.

Good neighbors

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's legislature is studying an omnibus bilateral-relations bill that codifies broad policy changes on relations with mainland China. The bill is expected to be approved by mid-May 1992 and is, among other things, a major step towards loosening the barriers to visits by China's citizens and government officials. If passed, the bill will govern relations with the mainland on family issues such as marriages and inheritances and business concerns such as shipping, aviation and communications.
