Stripped of power: Philippine electricity crisis hits small firms the hardest

Article Abstract:

Small businesses on the Philippines' Luzon Island are striving to cope with chronic brownouts. Daily 11 am to 7 pm power outages are causing businesses to lose productivity and to have to discharge employees. Luzon's power grid endured shortfalls on 86 out of 90 days in the 1st qtr of 1993. These shortages will probably continue in the near future. Consequently, many businesses are buying their own generators, which provide power but also add to overhead costs. The power crisis is affecting the economy as shown by the 5% drop in manufacturing output in the 1st qtr of 1993.

Fowl play: Indonesian poultry firms gear up for a chicken boom

Article Abstract:

Chicken growers and producers are anticipating a boom in chicken sales in Indonesia because of rising incomes and the nutritional habits of the primarily Islamic population. At present, Indonesia consumes far less chicken than neighboring nations. Increasing urbanization is expected to mean that fewer people will purchase the traditional village chickens that currently dominate the market. The three companies poised for this explosion are Japfa Comfeed, Charoen Pokphand Indonesia and Anwar Sierad.
