Shipping takes shape: cross-straits proposal awaits Chinese nod

Article Abstract:

Taiwan has proposed letting shippers operate between special transhipment centers and Chinese ports across the Taiwan Straits but Beijing has yet to respond. An agreement would end a 45-year ban on cross-straits shipping, potentially worth $9.8 billion in 1994, a figure that rises 25% annually. Beijing dislikes Taiwan's proposal to let foreign carriers share in the trade. Any rapprochement on the issue will include fudging definitions rather than real political change. Evergreen Marine stands to gain the most.
