It is vital that ordinary people are helped to understand the principles of sustainable development, according to Earth Centre Chief Executive Jonathan Smales. It is clear that steel has a significant role to play in sustainable development, as new steel already contains a significant amount of recycled material and steel is also easier to reuse than heavyweight construction. He believes that the Earth Centre, which plays a valuable educational role, must take its ecological responsibilities seriously, and for this reason it invests extensively in land reclamation and habitat improvement.

Applying Scarpa's principles to a Huddersfield textile mill

West Mill, a disused textile mill in Huddersfield, England, has been converted by Peter Wright and Martin Phelps into a new School of Computing and Mathematics for the University of Huddersfield. It has been possible to use high quality materials, despite a limited budget, and the original fabric of the building has been exposed and restored. The development has allowed a range of different spaces to be created.
